Dirty Thirty, Indeed

Dirty Thirty

Oh my gosh, it’s been awhile. The party and the trip to Africa happened. Not to mention a few others big revelations. First and foremost being: we’re moving to L.A.!!! Evan accepted a job offer in Los Angeles to continue working with Stumptown Coffee Roasters. I’ll be leaving my post at the Woodsman Tavern in March in order to join him down south. My departure from this group of people is bittersweet, as we really have become family. That said, I miss my husband, who has been living in DTLA since the first of the year.

Now…where did we leave off? That’s right! Back to the party!

So many wonderful people were involved to make this special event successful. I wanted to indulge my Francophilia and love of Woody Allen so I chose “La Vie en Rose” as a theme. (An added bonus: I finally wear my hatband in public!) I am deeply indebted to our many friends and family who invested their time and energy to see my vision come to life. Fittingly for this animal lover, proceeds from the event benefited our friends Amy’s animal rescue and adoption organization The Pixie Project. You can see more photos and silly costumes from the event by skipping over to Paige’s blog or by checking out the gallery from StudioBooth. Once again, many, many thanks to everyone involved. Literally. Could Not. Have Done it. Without You. Thanks for making my entry into “adulthood” so memorable. Especially Mr. E. Dohrmann: It’s a pleasure growing old with you, Sir.

*The party spread was pretty ridiculous and entirely self catered! It took about a week to nail down my “Midnight in Paris” menu and required the help of several family members in order to pull it off. The menu included:

Rosemary Almonds

Olives with Orange and Fennel

French Onion Soup Stuffed Mushrooms

Cheese and Charcuterie boards with various pickles, jams and mustards

Pissaladieres (Provencal Pizzas with caramelized onions and anchovies)

Mini Ham and Brie Sandwiches wrapped in craft paper tied with bakers twine

Cookie Platter complete with Macarons Et Madeleines (naturally!)

Next up: AFRICA!

Hello: Los Angeles, CA

24 May

I recently joined E. Dohrmann on a business trip down to Los Angeles. I used to live there but man-oh-man, how things have changed over the last eight years. One of our bestest friends in the entire world recently escaped the Portland rain and moved to Downtown LA. Being in his presence over the week made this large city feel very small and quite familiar. We spent a lot of time up on the roof of his building taking in the sights and marveling at the glorious weather.

We booked at The Standard in Downtown LA. We loved our spacious room and the vibrant hotel scene. (Emphasis on the word scene). While E. tended to business during the day I sipped on rooftop poolside cocktails. The location proved perfect for nighttime bar hopping, catching up with friends, and discovering this blossoming area. Continue reading

You’re Coming Home With Me

27 Apr

This headband from Ruche’s Bridal Collection is perfection. That is a fact. Today, I buy (pssssst: HURRY! There are only THREE left in stock!). If you need me I’ll be sipping absinthe and listening to Django Reinhardt.

UPDATE: This hatband (headband-hat hybrid) is even more fabulous than previously thought possible! AND it arrived just in time for Derby day. That said, Evan and I neither drank mint julep margaritas or watched the Derby today (May 5th aka Cinco de Mayo or Cinco de Derby). Instead I wore this hat while we worked on our laptops on the couch for approximately three hours. After we finished working on our various projects we shut the laptops down, got in the car and watched the full moon rise over the horizon from the park near our house. Then we went out for a late dinner at the sweetest little french(ie) bistro in NE Portland. It was perfection. I’m sure at least part of this night I owe to the hatband. And for the record, we ended up listening to La vie en rose.

My sister is the best. Not only because she sends me surprise packages containing shoes, but shoes I actually love and wear daily. These prairie boots from Madewell are to die. Thank you, Sister.

Other People’s Houses: Kristen

Meet Kristen D. Murray. Her interests include gardening, hiking the Columbia Gorge and Oregon Coast, bunny rabbits, and Bordeaux wine. She also happens to be one of Portland’s most celebrated pastry chefs (extra bonus points). When she’s not busy preserving homegrown concord grape coulis or mastering black pepper cheesecake she’s working on her next magnum opus, setting down the foundation for building her own shop in town. I was recently invited into Kristen’s adorable NE Portland bungalow to shoot pictures for another project but I couldn’t help but ask to poke around in her extensive book collection, represented in several rooms throughout her home. Basically she’s a gal after my own heart.

Happy Halloween

31 Oct

Me: “Would you be willing to be Mark Anthony for Halloween?”

E. Dohrmann: “Like Jennifer Lopez’s Ex?”

Me: “Uh, no.”

And for the record, E. Dohrmann’s costume also included a shield bearing the likeness of Romulus and Remus. (He also was supplied with a sword, though he refused to carry it in public.)

Other People’s Houses: Hannah

This is the bar at my friend Hannah’s house. I love that it’s comprised almost entirely of locally distilled spirits. It also covers my bar essentials: Gin, Whiskey, and Coffee Liqueur.

Isn’t it beautiful?
